Regional Overview

Welcome to the Neighborhood

The Newberry region is comprised of Alachua, Gilchrist, and parts of Levy county, with a total of 13 area municipalities. While much of the region has retained its agricultural heritage, overall the region has a diverse mix of industries, including business and professional services, logistics, healthcare, and manufacturing. It is also home to the state’s flagship education and research institution, the University of Florida.   While the University has long been known for the successes of its sports teams, more recently it has been its successes in the field of innovation that have been gaining attention and bringing focus to the region. The University of Florida ranks behind only MIT and the California University System in the number and value of new products brought to market, and recently UF’s Sid Martin Biotech Incubator was named the number-one biotech incubator in the world.

Nationally Acclaimed Healthcare

The region is home to world-class healthcare facilities in the University of Florida Shands Hospital System, which includes UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital and UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, which was recognized by U.S. News as one of the top hospitals for children. The area is also served by North Florida Regional Medical Center, which is a full-service private hospital.

Regional Partnerships

Newberry is an active member of the Gainesville Council for Economic Outreach Regional Partners Program. CEO’s Regional Partners Program is an alliance of municipalities working together to improve the local business environment and thus bring new economic development opportunities to the region.
